Vera, Vinho Verde, Rose, 2011

4/5 $10.00

As the hot summer months drone on, I am constantly in search of wines that are served nice and cold, but also have a decent punch and complexity. Case in point, the Vinho Verde Rose from Vera. Usually a wine for $10 makes me question having both said “punch” and “complexity,” but with a description like bright, fruity, fresh, and dry, as well as a gorgeous bottle presentation (think beautiful ruby red color and awesome label), I went with it. And I am glad I did. The medium-bodied rose definitely packs some flavor, as well as the tell-tale effervescence characteristic of the Vinho Verde region. It has a good amount of juicy strawberry and cherry flavor, while still having a strong minerality and acidity to counteract it become too sweet. Also, it smells great! Like a bunch of fresh picked berries. So bring this along to your next picnic or outdoor gathering, or just start buying cases of it to get you through the rest of this unbearably hot summer (I mean it’s 10 bucks), as its surely a great find, both taste and value wise.

Advertising professional by day and wine drinker by night, often overwhelmed by the sheer choices in wine stores, I have a tendency to not drink the same wine twice. My biggest tip to all Amateur winos, never swirl the glass in your hand, you just look pretentious. Swirl it on the table and you'll never worry again about that favorite sweater having a big red wine stain on it.
